WA State Clinical Supervision
As an approved supervisor, who do I supervise and what is required for licensure for WA State mental health clinicians?
I supervise LMHCAs and LMFTAs and am open to supervising those working toward their independent social work license. In order to become an associate of your desired license, you need an approved supervisor to sign a document from the WA State Department of Health stating that they will be supervising your clinical hours. The following are the requirements for various licenses that I can supervise.
Once you obtain your associate license from the Department of Health, you can begin seeing clients under the supervision of your clinical supervisor. In order to become independently licensed you need to achieve the following:
LMHC (Licensed Mental Health Counselor)
Once you obtain your LMHCA, you can begin seeing clients under the supervision of your clinical supervisor. In order to become independently licensed you need to achieve the following:
3,000 hours of experience, or 36 months of full time (whichever comes first):
1,200 direct client contact (individuals, couples, families, or groups)
100 hours of immediate supervision with LMHC or other license (with up to one other associate)
*If your degree is CACREP accredited, you’ll be credited 50 supervision hours and 500 contact hours*
LMFT (Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist)
Once you obtain your LMFTA, you can begin seeing clients under the supervision of your clinical supervisor. In order to become independently licensed you need to achieve the following:
3,000 hours of experience, and 24 months full time:
1,000 direct client contact (individuals, couples, families, or groups)
500 must be diagnosing and treating couples and families
200 hours of supervision
100 must be one-on-one supervision (with up to one other associate)
100 may be one-on-one or group supervision (with up to six associates)
*At least 100 of your supervision hours must be with an LMFT who has at least 5 years of clinical experience. Meaning I can only supervise up to 100 of your hours.*
*If your degree is COAMFTE accredited, you’ll be credited 100 supervision hours and 500 contact hours*
Approach to Supervision
My supervision model is an extension of my approach to therapy. Taking an integrative approach, I draw from Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Somatic modalities such as The Trauma-Conscious Yoga Method and Brainspotting, and work from a lens of social justice, acknowledging challenges of intersectionality and the role of oppressive systems in our lives. I believe we all have a unique voice and power within us to inspire immense change and healing in the lives of those around us. The purpose of supervision is to facilitate the supervisee’s (a) clinical and professional development, self-awareness, and cultural competence; (b) increase and strengthen skills acquisition; and (c) ensure client welfare. Whether we borrow from my theories and techniques, or discover new ones based on your personal interests, my goal is to support you in building confidence in your own inner knowing and ability to bring your authentic self into work with your clients.
